ART455A Outside Model

Outdoor Model

All of my previous assignments for ART455A have been indoors, so for this assignment, I am allowed to shoot outdoors. The point of this assignment is to see how we are able to control the light outdoors, and it is much harder because of the bright sun (or lack of sun), so there are two photos we must have. One is more of a portrait, and the other is an advertisement. We have to be able to advertise our cell phone by also using the photo that I have taken earlier this semester, which I hate, but oh well. It might be cool. *shrug* Once again, thanks to Tricia for being my model. I lucked out that she wore yellow and green since the background was about the same colors, so it basically complemented each other. I definitely learned that I really should look at magazine cut outs more because I really have a hard time directing what people should pose. *sigh*

And here’s the camera technical talk. I went onto the internet to search how to take better portrait photos because I have always loved the whole blurry background, focused subject portraits. I think it really brings the person out in a photo, and I just like how it looks altogether. I learned that it was the Aperture, so I shot these in Aperture priority. I used the smallest aperture because it makes the background blurry whereas the largest aperture makes the background less blurry. I also used the Exposure Compensation setting on my camera because without it, it would’ve been too dark. At first I shot her when the sun was on her, and it really made everything “glow” too much. So I used the EC -0.7. I feel like I should’ve used -0.3 since the lighting does seem a little cold, but I still like how they looked. Constructive criticisms, please.

ART455A Model Lighting

Full Body Butterfly
Short Lit Long Loop
Short Loop Medium Loop
Broad Diamond

On Monday evening, I was at school with Grace and KK until 10:30 p.m. to work on our ART455A Advertising Photography assignment. This one’s about model lighting, and thanks to KK for being our model. We had so much trouble working on the pocket wizards/transmitters at first. It wouldn’t make the lights go off when we really need it to go off. So then around 8 p.m., Grace went to buy new batteries, and it slowly turned out to be okay, but we were definitely running out of time. I even had to use Grace’s Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi, and I was really not used to using it at all. I’m still not. *pats her Nikon D60*

Anyway, as mentioned earlier, this assignment was about model lighting. There are at least seven different types of lighting: butterfly, short lit, short loop, loop, long loop, broad and diamond. I am not going to describe each of them, but it was interesting to see what kind of light works on a person. It varies on the person as well since not everyone has the same face features. Well, this was my first time doing such lighting. I would definitely like to work on it more to improve. Criticisms are welcome (other than the dirty floor with the footprints on the full body photo, haha).

ART455A Advertising Photography

Jenny L. - Samsung Beat

Do any of you remember this entry where I posted a very crappy photo of my cell phone for my ART455A Advertising Photography class? (Probably not since that entry was a month ago.) Well, the photo above is my final shot that I had submitted to the professor. Compare/contast? I don’t like both of them either way. This was such a painful assignment to do, especially since we were comparing the photo we took with the actual advertised photo. I am so glad to be done with it. Haha.

Jenny L. - Cookies

The next photo assignment was to take a photo of anything on a white table top. I don’t really like how this one turned out because of the bottom part. That part turned out a little grey for some reason. I also could’ve used some other item that I really liked, but I didn’t have anything at the time other than some cookies. I had fun experimenting with basic advertising style, though.

Jenny Lee - Accessory

The most recent assignment was fashion accessory with any background other than plain white, black and grey. I suppose that this one is my favorite out of everything else that I’ve taken for this class. There are a couple of things I would’ve done differently, though. I would’ve provided my own background flowers other than using Leiann’s, and I was actually thinking about going to Wal-Mart last weekend to do so, but it really slipped out of my mind. The gold fabric belongs to Professor Miller, and I just love it because it’s so pretty with the sandals. On the sandals itself, I would’ve made it at an angle to show the shoes more, but I did get a good angle out of the straps. The light could also be a little bit warmer overall.

So, this is my progress on my ART455A Advertising Photography class. I like it, and it is a very hard field to be in. I still don’t like setting up the lights and booms (light generators), mainly because they’re heavy, and I really don’t have a lot of upper body strength. Haha. I really have to push myself, though. I wouldn’t get anything done if I don’t push myself. On that note, I should also be typing out a study guide for my SOC304OL midterm that I have to take before Sunday night. *sigh* I’ve been so procrastinating and lazy at the same time lately. It’s so terrible. I really have to get studying and working, so I won’t fail!
