For The Past 3 Weeks…

Rose

My life has been overwhelming busy and stressful lately, so that’s why I haven’t been updating. I have decided to update now because tomorrow’s my 21st birthday, and I will be celebrating it. I am positive that some (alcoholic) drinks will be involved since 21 is the legal age to drink in the states, but I am definitely not going to be wasted. And for most people who know me, I don’t really drink. But anyway, here is a long overdue update.

Red Sun

For the first week and a half, southern California mountains were on fire all over. The air quality wasn’t good at all. You can see ashes, and you can smell the air quality being worse than it usually is. The fires definitely made the sun glow in a red-orange color during sunset, and it felt really surreal at times.

Toy Car

I went to the photojournalism lab on one Wednesday to test out the studio lighting there since I figured it would be good to learn, especially since it is all what my ART455A Advertising Photography class is about. Studio lighting is tough work with setting up the lights and everything. I still don’t really know how to work it well, to tell you the truth. Paul helped out a lot, and we first tried out this toy car that he brought. This was my favorite shot out of all.

Earth Day – 112/365

Happy Earth Day!

Today I had lunch with Kanie, who’s Grecia’s childhood friend and my future roommate. Grecia IMed me last weekend, saying that her friend Kanie is going to live in the dorms next year, and she doesn’t want bad roommates. This Saturday is the roommate selection day, and we have decided to meet up in person before we do the whole process. It was nice meeting up with her. She and I have quite a number of things in common, especially with stuffed toys, hence the squirrel! Today was also the Earth Fair event at school, and they were giving out free stuff — the squirrel being one of them, so I went to get one. Isn’t it cute?! I have yet to name it.

My long awaited opinion article about the food in Sierra Marketplace is finally published onto the Daily Sundial! I’m very happy about how it turned out. Many thanks to Eileen, the opinion editor, for helping me with it, too.

Here’s the online edition of my story and photos:

Slight Frustration – 96/365

96/365

More and more documentary work today. Jonathan and I were planning to do interviews on the restaurant part of Historic Filipinotown, but um… they didn’t really work out. We did manage to talk to someone named Beverly, interview her, and a photo at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), a community center and an after school youth center. Now we just need detail photos of what happens at that place. We also talked to the administrator of the Filipino American Library, interviewed him (his name’s also Jonathan), and a photo. We went around the neighborhood many times, and we even saw this teddy bear, so we took a few photos of that. I personally think the teddy bear looks pissed off, and even though that really isn’t exactly the word to describe how I feel about the documentary, it definitely shows some sort of frustration that’s in this huge project, especially when people decline to work with you…
